This "actuality" film was released by Gaumont, a French company. The "star" is aviation pioneer Leon Bierot, who in 1909 took off from Calais, France and safely landed his airship in Dover, England. This crossing had been attempted by several earlier air enthusiasts, most of whom met with disaster. The flight itself was well photographed, even though the great balloon was a bit indistinct at times. The trade magazine Variety offered the opinion that First Airship Crossing the English Channel would be a popular item, inasmuch as it cashed in on the current flying "craze" (as if this was a passing fad!)
