The notion of a female detective was new enough to inspire derision in this 1909 Pathe comedy. The audience never knows what the female sleuth is sleuthing about: At the outset, she is shown reading an important document then tearing the paper into little pieces. The bulk of the film finds the heroine skulking mysteriously around town, while a pair of male robbers adopt a series of bizarre disguises. Dressed as ghosts, the villains break into the home of a sleeping man and steal his valuables. The strenuous efforts by the crooks to cover their tracks prove futile as they are easily chased down by the lady detective and virtually every policeman in Paris.
