An aging American returns to Russia, the birthplace from which he was taken as a baby. Fulfilling his father's wish he travels to a small remote Russian town in the middle of the wilderness, far from the conventional tourist routes, where his ancestors have been living for two centuries. Utilizing the services of two outsiders he hires for the trip, the expatriate embarks on the sentimental journey that reveals the real Russia "with all its extremes;" its mixture of high and low, beautiful and outrageous.
