Following his award-winning film Monkey Grip (USFF 1985), Ken Cameron is back with Fast Talking, a lively tale of a tough little Sydney schoolkid and his problems with family and school authorities.
Steve Caron (Ron Zuanic) is a charismatic 15-year-old con artist with a scam for every occasion who can fast talk himself into or out of any situation. We follow him through his last year of school and out into the world. It’s a trouble-ridden and sometimes painful transition, but one that he navigates with confidence. His world, the oppression of Sydney’s urban sprawl, is populated by a bizarre mix of characters. We meet a family consisting of two uncontrollable brothers, an unemployed drunkard father and two mangy greyhounds. We see Steve’s schoolmates, a combination of disillusioned cynics and fresh young enthusiasts. There is Steve’s close-knit, ratpack gang, and, in particular, Redback, an ex-racing champ who, seeing in Steve something of his old rebellious self, takes him under his wing.
