Toshiyuki Nagashima, one of Japan’s most popular young actors, won numerous awards for his performance in Far Thunder, a refreshing departure from the “youth film” genre, and runner-up in the 1981 Kinema Junpo annual poll (Japan’s equivalent of our Academy Awards). Nagashima stars as a young urban agricultural worker (growing tomatoes in the shadow of a huge public housing project) who must come to terms with the tensions within his family and betrayals among his friends amidst the rapidly changing environment of modern-day Japan. Director Negishi, like several of Japan’s prominent young filmmakers, began his career in the soft-core pornography industry where small budgets, hastily written scripts and short shooting schedules encouraged a quick mind and talent for improvisation, both of which are well reflected in Far Thunder.
