This Latvian farce makes fun of modern Russian history. The protagonist is Iwan Raczynski who was born in St. Petersburg, Florida. He, using the pen name John F. Romanoff, writes Russian epic novels. His newest book covers three generations of his Russian family, beginning with his great-grandfather in 1882, as they deal with the political turmoil. The film is not in chronological order. Rather it is a series of free-flowing comic and tragic adventures narrated by Iwan. In addition to the novel, the film also chronicles Iwan's journey to Moscow where he will search for inspiration for yet another book. En route he drives all the other passengers nuts with his non-stop chatter.
