An is a 17-year-old schoolgirl who remains cheerful in spite of her country's war. While her father is in the military, An visits a young widow whose son is also in the Army. She falls in love with his picture and begins written correspondence with the soldier she never met. The two exchange passionate letters before he is killed in battle. The victory celebration after the withdrawal of American troops is short-lived, as the Vietnamese turn their attention to the invading Chinese. An is portrayed as a nonpolitical anti-war symbol as her country is victimized first by the French, then the Americans, and finally China.
