In this bleak drama, a fresh-faced twenty-year old living in Soviet Georgia during the rule of Leonid Brezhnev hangs with his buddies in and around Tblisi. They lead an idle and directionless existence, looking up relatives who live by the seashore, smoking grass, and generally getting up to no good. One day, they chance on a gang of drug pushers, and since they outnumber them, they easily manage to lift some of their product, thinking to make some easy money by selling it themselves. When one of them decides to add to his experience by trying the heroin, he makes a big mistake in dosage and dies. From then on, the other boy's life goes steadily downhill. First, he is captured and sentenced to a relatively tame prison-camp term, but when the pushers he helped bilk earlier have him beat up, he resists and manages to kill one of them. This results in a prison term so harsh that the filmmaker replaces the young-looking actor in his role with a tired, scarred and sallow-looking man who, on his attainment of freedom in Uzbekistan, finds work with a local drug ring.
