Santiago Rojas works in a small shop located in a Barcelona subway station. Rojas spends his days selling newspapers, cigarettes, candy and other sundries to folks who've stepped off the train or waiting to catch a ride; most of them don't pay any attention to the man by the counter, who has led a remarkable life. Rojas was once a professional boxer who defeated Oscar Sanchez Sandoval in 2002 to become the European featherweight champion; however, Rojas was good enough that a number of ranked contenders refused to meet him in the ring, and with time his career ground to a halt as worthy challengers failed to step forward. Filmmaker Victor Garcia allows us to watch Rojas as he goes through a typical day in the documentary El Ex-boxeador (aka The Former Boxer); without spending much time on the details of his career as a fighter, Garcia follows Rojas as he spends his day at the shop, and his night focusing on his spiritual pursuits. The Former Boxer was an official selection at the 2010 Rotterdam International Film Festival.
