Bhappi Soni's coming-of-age romantic drama Ek Phool Char Kante (1960) observes the passions that gestate between a young man and a young woman. Sanjiv (Sunil Dutt) is a freewheeling, happy go-lucky young man trapped in a state of perpetual adolescence, who spends his days frittering away his time and money on an indulgent lifestyle - much to the chagrin and concern of his parents (Mumtaz Begum and Bir Sakhuja). Sushma (Waheeda Rehman), on the other hand, was orphaned early in life and has been raised by her four uncles - Johnny, Rashid Khan, David and Dhoomal. Sushma and Sanjiv soon meet and fall in love, but fate seems destined to hold them apart, particularly when each of Sushma's uncles expresses a unique and different view about the type of "ideal man" she should marry - from the religious proselytizer envisioned by Dhoomal, to the rock-and-roll aficionado imagined by Johnny. It seems that the uncles can never quite agree, which threatens to leave Sushma perpetually single, and even worse is the fact that Sanjiv fails to satisfy any of the uncles.
