In a series of anecdotal scenes, this film reveals the inner turmoil of Max Rudlinger, an anchorman for television news, as he struggles with the idealism he once felt in the battle to put a human face on the cold bureaucracy of the country, and the listless acceptance of the status quo -- his present state. One day his girlfriend goes off with friends and he takes the day off, meeting a disparate series of individuals, from a frustrated housewife to a young woman who tries to open him up to the facts of society as it is. She goes with him to his station when it is time for him to read the news, hoping he will add some commentary (using his earlier writings) on the Swiss and their foibles. In the end, he cannot carry through with his own personal statement, and the woman leaves. Max is once again faced with the issue of his passions and the strait-jacket he must wear as an anchorman -- an issue that is getting harder and harder to ignore.
