Gaumont's Duped wavers uncertainly between comedy and melodrama. Stuck with a shipment of hideous plastic busts, an antiques dealer hits upon a brilliant idea to move the merchandise. He offers a sale on an old book, but not before sticking a note between the leaves of the volume, suggesting that a fortune is hidden in one of the busts. A customer purchases the book, reads the note, and is promptly gulled into buying all of the busts, which he takes home and smashes to bits in search of the nonexistent riches. Going crazy with frustration, the hapless customer takes to the streets and begins smashing any statue he happens to come across. Finally dragged off to a lunatic asylum, the poor fellow dies in agony as bugs crawl over his bald head.
