This biographical film, showing the contributions made by a Canadian surgeon to the Chinese communist revolution, had largely been completed in 1964 just prior to the onset of the Cultural Revolution. Even so, the fact that it depicted a Westerner rather than an ethnic Chinese person made it a questionable product. It was suppressed for over 10 years and was finally edited and released to be shown at film festivals in the late '70s. Dr. Bethune died in 1939 and participated in the legendary Long March. He fought, heroically, it is said, with communist guerillas in Yenan Province.
