This drama was based on a novel by then-popular author Cosmo Hamilton. It reflects the mores of the day, in which a woman's main purpose was to bear children, and those who decided against motherhood were depicted as cold and selfish. Evelyn Brent practically steals the show with her performance as the self-centered wife. Jack Scorvier (George Relph) is a young lawyer of some note who attracts and marries the socially ambitious Violet (Evelyn Brent). Violet immerses herself in her social life and tells her husband that she has neither the time nor inclination to start a family. Scorvier does everything he can to show Violet her "better womanhood," but finds she is a "door that has no key." In spite of his unhappiness, he continues to make a success of his career, and when Violet carelessly casts him off, he marries Joan (Agnes Southwick), the domestically-inclined minister's daughter who has loved him all along.
