The negative impact of a heat wave on both marriage and housekeeping sets the stage for this quirky comedy from Japan. Namakura Kuniaki and Morita Ayako play a young couple sharing a small, run-down apartment; she's a waitress at a cheap restaurant, while he collects paper which he sells to a recycling plant. Neither makes much money and they can't afford air conditioning, a serious dilemma during a brutally hot summer. The husband is already something of a slacker, and the heat saps him of any and all ambition, leaving him to lie on the couch all day in a pool of sweat. When the wife loses her job at the diner, the two end up spending more time together than ever, and his slobby sloth runs up against her desire to keep their little flat presentable. Dog Days Dream was the first feature film from stand-up comic turned filmmaker Ichii Masahide.
