This admiring documentary studies the life and activities of a famous feminist rebel in Japan, Genshyu Hanayagi, who is opposed to just about every stricture of Japanese tradition. One suspects that she's not opposed to tradition, only to the inflexible rules which forbid people from outside a select group of families from becoming involved in traditional art-forms, or the national dress code for women, which forbids any clothing which accentuates a woman's figure. In 1980, she was sentenced to eight months in prison for using a knife to inflict a superficial, symbolic wound on a woman who runs a closed and exclusive school for one of Japans traditional arts. Genshyu is a performance artist who has attempted to start a "folk theater" far from Tokyo and would like to start many more all over Japan.
