Sessue Hayakawa and Tsuru Aoki -- husband and wife in real life -- play a married couple in this drama, based on the novel, The Battle, by Claude Farrere. The Marquis Yorisaka (Hayakawa) goes to Paris on a secret government mission and while he is there, his wife, the Marquise (Aoki), meets Mrs. Hockey (Gina Palerme), a wealthy divorcee. Mrs. Hockey introduces the naïve Japanese Marquise to American customs and styles, and soon she has gained the attention of Herbert Fergan (Felix Ford), a captain and attaché of the English army. The two are drifting towards an affair when the Marquis comes home unexpectedly and finds them together. He then finds a place for Fergan on the battleship he is commanding and keeps a close eye on him. When the Marquis is wounded during a battle, he orders Fergan to take his place, even though the Englishman protests that he is neutral. As a result, Fergan is killed. The Japanese are victorious, and the Marquis returns on a stretcher. His wife reveals that nothing happened between her and Fergan, and the couple decides that their Japanese customs work best for them.
