In CROW AND WEASEL, two young men undertake a journey more difficult than they imagine and find a wisdom they never expected. The story of these two friends and their quest unfolds in the forests and on the tundra of northern North America. It's during a time when people and animals share a common language. The world is still fresh. Crow, more cerebral, more spiritually aware, and Weasel, a more adept horseman and hunter, come to understand how to depend on each other. They learn to survive in strange new landscapes, amid new animals and plants. They listen to the counsels of Grizzly Bear, of Badger and others they meet, curious, bewildered and enthralled.
When Crow and Weasel finally turn their horses for home, full of enthusiasm for all they have seen and aware of all they have been given, they face a time of starvation and a nearly fatal accident. Their determination to return home and their desire to give the benefit of what they have learned to their people are notes the story closes on. We see that Crow and Weasel have begun to incorporate the principles of tolerance and generosity, of kindness and love, that they have discovered, and that these things will guide them and their people the rest of their days.
Book by Barry Lopez and illustrated by Tom Pohrt.
