Most of this Essanay three-reeler takes place in a large mansion along the California seacoast. The central character is a tea importer who moonlights as a smuggler. While the importer enjoys the hospitality of an old friend -- and, simultaneously, puts the moves on the friend's wife -- his partner in crime, a sea captain, has a run-in with a secret service agent. Sick of taking all the risks in the operation, the captain blackmails the importer, forcing the latter to enter into a lucrative business arrangement with his married friend that will net millions (the captain, of course, wants a generous piece of the action). When the secret service catches up with the importer and the captain, it is the innocent friend who takes the fall and is sent to prison. The friend's wife, capitalizing on the importer's fondness for her, agrees to work with the secret service to smash the smuggling operation. The outcome of the plot hinges on a "tapped" telephone conversation and a phony drinking binge.
