Mrs. Sherwood's dying request is for her oldest son, Darrell (Crane Wilbur), to take care of his brother Richard. After they grow up, this is easier said than done -- while Darrell becomes the beloved village preacher, Richard becomes a lawyer who spends more time causing trouble than pursuing his trade. He gets a girl pregnant and refuses to admit paternity -- in fact, he pins it on Darrell, which causes him to lose his sweetheart, Faith. Richard marries Faith instead, but he soon tires of her. He also gambles away a good portion of Darrell's money, and then starts to commit robberies. Because of the oath he made to his mother, Darrell takes responsibility and is commanded to leave town. But as he is on his way, Richard is found dead. Beside him is a note in which he confesses everything. So Faith's father fetches Darrell and brings him home.
