Acclaimed director Shun Nakahara spins this tale about social malaise, spiritual longing, and sexual excess. Yuki Asakura (Miwako Ichikawa), who works as a writer for a financial journal, comes to after a drunken fling with her co-worker Kimura (Jun Uemura), only to discover that her brother is dead. When she returns home, she finds her mother devastated by the loss and her father curse her brother's name. A drifting ne'er-do-well, Yuki's sibling locked himself in his room, starving himself to death. After the funeral, she ventures into his room to discover a vacuum hose attached to the wall. As she investigates further, she not only starts to remember incidents that offer clues to her brother's bizarre behavior, but also starts to see the ghost of her dead sibling as well. Fearing for her own sanity, Yuki retreats into drunken rounds of lovemaking with Kimura. Sensing the same feelings of illness as she felt in her brother's room, she flees Kimura and eventually finds comfort in the arms of her college psychology professor Kunisada (Masahiko Cha). Later she meets her former classmate Ritsuko (Miho Tsumiki) who is researching shamanism in Okinawa. She tells her that instead of a psychological breakdown, which is Kunisada's diagnosis, Yuki is headed toward a world of forbidden preternatural powers.
