“To celebrate in the face of horrible things” is the keystone of this warm and uplifting look at the life of the late San Francisco actor-designer Shuck Solomon and his community of friends and colleagues.
After losing his brother, lover and several friends to the AIDS epidemic, Solomon was himself diagnosed with the disease. In response to this, a joyous and defiant 40th birthday party tribute was held in his honor on March 10, 1986, an event which provided a rallying point for the community and a focal point for this film. Coming of Age weaves the special excitement of that evening with extensive interviews with Solomon and those around him. It is a film of humor, intelligence, hope and utter frankness.
