Director Raphaël Mathié's slice-of-life documentary Combalimon visits Jean, an elderly French bachelor whose family history is tied to the ownership of the titular property - a rural Gallic farm. As the picture unfurls, Jean must come face-to-face not only with the sale of the property in question, but with the prospect of relinquishing his own identity. On the very cusp of retirement, without any children, he looks ahead and acknowledges the end of his ancestral line and the extinction of a very specific indigenous way of life that he enjoyed for decades. The film thus attains a quality that waxes as elegiac as it does lyrical.
