Beginning in 1923, Pathe released a series of short features, collectively called "Chronicles of America." These historical dramas ran anywhere from two to four reels, and the first was about the quest that brought Christopher Columbus to the "New World." Adding a note of prestige to this production is Yale University, which cooperated with the research. The tale follows Columbus (Fred Eric) as he becomes ever more frustrated by the King of Portugal (Paul McAllister), who promises to send him on his trip. Finally the day comes when Columbus discovers that the king has already sent out one of his own men, who has returned claiming that there is no land to be found. Once again, Columbus solicits the Spanish rulers, but has no luck until a priest intervenes for him. The explorer finally gets a chance to meet with King Ferdinand (Robert Gaillard) and Queen Isabella (Dolores Cassinelli). The queen sells her jewels to finance Columbus' trip, and he heads off for the West Indies and immortality.
