Among the members of the Mohawk tribe on Quebec's Kahnawake reservation, few issues constitute a greater local stigma than that of marrying outside of the community (or outside of one's own ethnicity). With her documentary Club Native, director Tracey Deer - herself a member of this tribe - presents enduring biographical profiles of four Mohawk women who found their lives immeasurably altered by the presence of local rules about interracial (and inter-tribal) dating and marriage. On many occasions, as Deer reminds her audience, it may come down to a question of love versus loyalty to family and community preservation; disregarding the rules usually means automatically forfeiting one's individual and tribal rights. Deer also uses screen time to explore the gruesome, oppressive and brutal history of Canadian tyranny against its resident North American Indian tribes.
