Produced by Famous Players, the popular Avery Hopwood-Channing Pollock stage play +Clothes was first brought to the screen in early 1914. This four-reel drama is all about a young woman who desires the finer things in life -- specifically, beautiful clothes. In her quest for creature comforts, the heroine is careless with her morals, and as a result comes to a sorry end. This is the sort of film in which the villains all but twirl their mustaches and kick little dogs. Clothes was remade in 1920, then again in 1924; both versions were more subtly handled than the 1914 adaptation.
