Professed French film fanatic and former porno script writer Masahiro Kobayashi makes his directorial debut with this stylish drama about being down and out in Tokyo. The film's protagonist (Sansho Shinsui) is an alcoholic writer who leads a life of blissful self-annihilation. His friend, who runs a grungy hipster lounge, supplies him with an endless stream of liquor, and though he looks like a wet paper bag with a perpetual hangover, our hero has little trouble bedding a string of young women. He sinks further into the abyss when he takes up with an attractive homeless woman who shares his lust for cinema and the bottle: soon, he's spooning up with her on the street. Later, the protagonist stumbles upon another homeless person (Yasushi Kitamura), who is gay and dying of AIDS. Though he initially rejects the dying youth's advances, the protagonist cares for him as his death becomes imminent. Afterwards, he tries to restart his old boozing and womanizing routine, but soon realizes that he is squandering his life.
