In 1748 at Fort St. David, India, Robert Clive (Ronald Colman), a disenchanted East India Company clerk, joins the British army to help combat the French. Through brash daring, Clive escapes capture and leads a courageous attack that saves the entire British army. Within a year, Clive becomes the head of Southern India. He then returns to Britain, marries a friend's sister, Margaret (Loretta Young), and gains a seat in Parliament. Yet when uprisings stir India again, Clive is recalled east.
