Berna (Anna Lehr) begins life as a child of the Russian forests. After her father dies, she is sent to Kiev and lands right in the middle of a massacre. After this, she is sent to her cousin in the United States, where she goes to work in a sweatshop. Boss McManus (William H. Thompson), a crooked politician, takes advantage of her, and she becomes a prostitute. But then she meets and marries violinist Nicolaiv Turgenov (Jack Standing), and her life starts to improve. They have a child, and she pushes him ahead in his career. But while he is performing, he is seen by Ellen (Dorothy Dalton), McManus's daughter. She decides she wants him and has her father -- now a judge -- orchestrate a frame up so that Berna and Turgenov divorce. When Berna is in court and sees McManus in the judge's bench, she causes a scene, and he sends her to the workhouse for six months. Turgenov is given custody of the child. When Berna is released, she tracks down McManus, shoots him and then drops dead herself.
