Manni Petgar's behind-the-scenes documentary Cinema, Cinema concerns Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf and his decision to produce the 1995 Salaam Cinema. As Petgar's film opens, Makhmalbaf decides to make Salaam to commemorate the 100th birthday of filmdom. He places a classified advertisement in the paper requesting 100 tryouts to audition for the film; 5,000 show up. Petgar observes Makhmalbaf undertaking production of the movie and working with his cast and crew. On another level, however, Petgar also constructs the film as an ambitious allegory about the culture of contemporary Persian youth.
