The title of Chrigu refers to a nickname for filmmaker Christian Ziörjen, who is listed as co-director with his best friend, Jan Gassmann; the work represents Gassmann's peerlessly intimate documentary portrait of Ziörjen during the young man's last remaining days with a fatal tumor. The work traces Ziörjen's life, from his childhood on a Jura farm with gypsy parents to his tenure at the Waldorfschool and (very briefly) at the Buissessschool of St. Gallen. It also explores his subsequent decision to instead drop out and shoot films. Most of all, however, the documentary showcases how one who initially had the world at his feet ended up in a life-or-death struggle with virtually no chance of survival, yet never managed to relinquish hope. By the film's end, we also grasp the extent to which Ziörjen clung to a passion for filmmaking, creating one of the most resonant documentary portraits of India made during the past few decades, prior to his untimely death.
