A cast of non-professionals is carefully guided through their motions in the Russian social drama Children of the Revolution. Gulya Koroleva plays Vasilinka, a 10-year-old victim of an abusive home. When her father is implicated in a theft and murder, Vasilinka seeks out newer, more positive companionship. She joins the Young Pioneers, a group of children devoted to the communist cause. Through them, she realizes that her greater responsibility is to the State, so reluctantly but firmly she turns his father over to the authorities. Propagandistic, true, but Children of the Revolution also happens to be superbly directed and photographed.
