Master Vinayak follows up on his work Vilasi Ishwar with this bitterly ironic melodrama. The film opens with a bank employee getting caught stealing money to pay for his ailing wife's medicine. He is thrown in prison where he dies of shame. His elder son, Prakash (Vinayak), grows up and publishes a poem in the same newspaper that exploited his father's crime. He is awarded a literary prize by the judge (Hardikar) who sentenced his father while the judge's daughter, Chhaya (Leela Chitnis), falls for him. Unfortunately, love in this film proves to be fickle: Once Chhaya learns of Prakash's lowly parentage, she aids her father and her official suitor, Dr. Atul (Baburao Pendharkar), in accusations that Prakash tried to rape her. He is soon thrown in jail. Prakash's impoverished sister, Kala (Ratnaprabha), is forced into prostitution to pay for her younger brother Suman's (Marathe) unreasonably high medical bills issued by the rapacious Dr. Atul. Kala becomes impregnated but kills her baby because she can't feed it. Later, she too is thrown in jail.
