In 1984, tens of thousands of pounds of methyl isocyanate began leaking out of the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India. Approximately 5,000 people living in the vicinity of the plant died from exposure to the poison. Another Union Carbide factory is located in Kanawha Valley in West Virginia, producing the same chemical. Residents in the areas surrounding the facility have been trying to ensure their safety after a chemical leak occurred shortly after the Bhopal incident. Chemical Valley looks at citizens' attempts to bring about regulation of companies who manufacture potentially lethal products.
