The hardships of a real Filipino couple who are trying to eke out a living in any way they can, form the core of this 109-minute study of poverty and its sadly mundane realities. The couple live in a run-down, one-room slum dwelling and make whatever money they can by doing odd jobs, such as selling cigarettes. During the course of the filming, they discover that their young son has pneumonia and is malnourished -- but what more can they do to increase the quality and amount of food they are able to garner for him? Without moralizing on the plight of this simple couple, director Gary Kildea has presented a straightforward look at life on the lowest rung of an already poor society.
