The play is called CARSON McCULLERS much in the way that Ibsen’s play is called HEDDA GABBLER. It is a dramatic piece about an exceptional artist who is at war with herself, and as a result her artistic product is necessarily singular. Although not historically accurate, the play embraces the foundations of McCullers’ life and work: her marriage to Reeves McCullers, her repeated artistic interest in her own girlhood, her attempts to grapple with the racist system in which she was raised, her friendships with Tennessee Williams and Gypsy Rose Lee. The centerpiece will be the making of the play “The Member of the Wedding” especially her projected relationship with the actress playing Frankie (Julie Harris). The play was written to be performed by /Angelina Phillips as Carson McCullers.
