When first we meet socialite Margot Hughes (Norma Talmadge), she is in charge of a fortune-telling booth at a charity fundraiser (a scene filmed during an actual society bazaar held at New York's Grand Central Palace). Here she meets handsome and wealthy businessman Chadwick Himes (Eugene O'Brien), who instantly falls in love with her. But Margot's heart belongs to Dick Derwent (William Courtleigh Jr.), who though not as wealthy as Himes enjoys the same social connections. A sudden reversal in the Hughes family fortunes forces Margot to accept Himes' marriage proposal, though she makes it clear that she is still stuck on Derwent and as such makes Himes promise not to exercise his husbandly prerogative in the bedroom. Himes agrees, but he never stops trying to win Margot's love. It is up to Margot to realize that her relationship with Derwent will never go beyond the friendship stage -- a decision made at the precise moment when Himes renounces his pre-nuptial agreement and demands that Margot become a "real wife" to him.
