The Buffalo was already virtually extinct in the U.S. when this Pathe travelogue was released in late 1909. Whether or not the citizenry of Madeira, Spain was doing the right thing in exploiting their buffalo herds for entertainment purposes is a question not dwelled upon here. Instead, the film offers a series of fascinating glimpses of an extended buffalo chariot race, with the animals seemingly enjoying themselves as much as the spectators -- of course, this is assuming that any animal with a heavy yoke around its neck is truly having a good time. The reviewer for the trade magazine Variety felt that the races depicted herein were among the most exciting he'd ever seen.
