This Russian "class-struggle" drama is set in a tiny Jewish village just past the Soviet border. With the aid of an obsequious rabbi, wealthy Jewish merchant Novik (Polavski) avoids labor problems by refusing to hire his fellow Jews. Eventually, however, the local peasants revolt against this prejudicial treatment. Seeking an easy way out of his troubles, Novik latches on to an old village legend, wherein peace will be restored if the town's oldest spinster marries the most eligible bachelor. Unfortunately, the chosen bridegroom is languishing in jail as a political prisoner, so Novik arranges his release -- but only until after the wedding. The poor fellow is rescued from his fate by his fellow radicals, and the film ends with a rousing "up with the proletariat" folk song.
