The plot of The Bondwomen was incoherent at times, but undeniably exciting throughout. Dr. Hugh Ellis (John St. Polis) is led to believe that his frivolous wife Norma (Maude Fealy) has been unfaithful. The seeds of suspicion have been sown by Ellis' brother Ned (Harmon MacGregor), a drug addict who can't stand to see anyone else living happily. Ellis forces Norma out of their house, whereupon she gets mixed up with several unsavory underworld types. Upon taking "the cure," Ned confesses that his accusations against Norma were false, thereby setting the stage for a reconciliation between the doctor and his wife. Much of the story was devoted to Ned's dope-taking and dope-dealing friends, which though beneficial to the film's box-office performance was met with displeasure by the professional blue-noses of the world.
