This drama was adapted from a novel, The Substitute Prisoner, by Max Marcin. Lucy Cotton stars as Josephine Burden, a young heiress who is vacationing at a summer resort with her guardian, Herbert Whitmore (Thurlow Bergen). She goes to a casino and notices a handsome young man, Horace Beard (George Le Guere), who is a compulsive gambler. Beard notices her too and decides to swear off gambling if only they can meet. George Collins, a down-on-his luck broker (Frank O'Connor), observes the attraction and decides to take advantage of it. After Beard has had too much to drink, Collins approaches him and offers to introduce him to the heiress. He convinces Beard to sign a note for fifty thousand dollars, to be paid if the introduction leads to marriage. Beard and Josephine do get married, and Collins comes around to collect. When Josephine overhears the two men discussing the matter, she gets the wrong idea about Beard's motivations for marrying her and leaves him. Beard goes in search of the original note and a struggle results between him, Collins, and Whitmore. A pistol goes off and hits Whitmore. He eventually dies from the wound, but before he goes, he writes a note claiming suicide so that Collins -- who is married to his old flame (Lillian Bacon) -- is exonerated. Josephine finally listens to Beard's explanations, and the couple reconcile.
