Like Potemkin before it, Black Sea Mutiny dramatizes the 1913 capture of the Black Sea port of Odessa by Bolshevik revolutionists. Driven to desperate measures by the cruelties of their Czarist officers, the crewmen of the battleship Potemkin stage a mutiny and join the revolutionary cause. At first frightened off by a fleet of French warships, the courageous Russian seamen at last emerge victorious when their French counterparts turned mutineers themselves. The acting and direction are rather crude, undercutting the inherent drama of the situation. Still, Black Sea Mutiny served its propagandistic purpose in 1931, and was well-received by its target audience.
