This documentary follows the life of Bauhaus artist Friedl Dicker-Brandeis, who, in 1942, is deported from Vienna to Terezín, a Nazi German ghetto that offers inhabitants relative comfort and safety. During her time there, Dicker-Brandeis organizes secret art programs for city children and encourages them to express their fears and emotions through painting and drawing. Her cache of thousands of these artworks, which are discovered decades later, are a ray of hope in an otherwise bleak setting.
