Lubin's Billiken was a comedy built around a serious subject: Childhood disease. A tiny tot lies in her bed, hovering between life and death. Nothing that the child's parents or doctor can do will snap her out of her lethargy. But when the doctor offers the girl her "billiken" doll, the child immediately recovers. At this point, the film becomes a fantasy, as three animated billikens perform a dance for the benefit of the ailing kid. No classic, Billiken was at least better than the usual run of films from the Philadelphia-based Lubin company.
