Somewhat reminiscent of Dead Man Walking, Beyond Reason: A Friend on Death Row is a documentary that chronicles the friendship between Dutch social worker Gea Knol and her pen-pal Bryan Jennings, a convicted murderer who spent over 20 years on Florida's death row for the rape and murder of a little girl. When Knol visits Jennings for the first time, she finds evidence regarding her friend's alleged crime, and with a Dutch-American lawyer, tries to get his case reopened. Her visit also forces Knol to face up to the severity of Jennings' early behavior, and allows her -- and the viewer -- to observe the kind of violent environment that produced Jennings, a former Marine whose relatives proudly support capital punishment.
