In 1909 and 1910, Pathe built a series of comedy around a precocious schoolgirl identified only as Betty. Once again, Betty causes no end of trouble for her elders. Once again, she is threatened with dire punishments. And once again, she manages to wriggle out of paying for her misdeeds with one last stratagem. Reportedly quite popular with young moviegoers, the Betty films would seem to have been precursors to Hal Roach's Our Gang two-reelers. Unfortunately, few of the Betty comedies have survived to the present day.
