Apparently intended as a follow-up to its mammoth 5-part The World War as Seen Through German Spectacles, UFA Studios' Behind the German Lines was likewise culled from rare WWI newsreel footage. Unlike the earlier film, however, this 1928 documentary was neither financed nor sanctioned by the German government. As such, it was relatively free of flag-waving and rationalizing, concentrating instead on the nuts and bolts of total warfare. The brutality of some of the scenes effectively strips the film of any "Glories of War" trappings; there is nothing "glorious" to be found in its entire 9 reels. A few obviously studio-shot scenes are included to bridge the authentic wartime footage.
