Luis Felipe Degregori's documentary Beached travels to the Peruvian metropolis (and capital city) of Lima, for a sweeping sociological portrait of the many migrants who have settled there in recent years. Far from reaching perfect assimilation, these individuals - hailing, as they do, from a cross-section of backgrounds and cultures - are sadly relegated to Peruvian beaches at the fringe of the city where they attempt to set up makeshift shelters and lives for themselves. Despite their many individual differences, they share one common, and poignant, goal: to find a new life superior to the backgrounds and countries from which they hailed. Yet sadly, as Degregori unequivocally demonstrates, poverty, discrimination, urban violence and social injustice all too often stand in the way of this goal. With Beached, the filmmaker simultaneously calls attention to the shared plight of these migrants and pays homage to them, by documenting the manifold ways in which they have transformed the sociocultural landscape of the city.
