Legendary bad film-maker Robert J. Horner was reportedly legless (a result of a car accident) and wheeled himself around on a platform with wheels. This severe handicap did not prevent him from directing a nearly endless series of very cheap Westerns and action melodramas. Battling Bookworm, produced by screen pioneer Fred J. Balshofer, starred a Horner discovery, the Russian-born William Barrymore. A former member of the Czarist army, Barrymore used the moniker Kit Carson when starring in B-Westerns and Boris Bullock when playing villains. In non-Westerns he was William Barrymore, implying a non-existent relationship with the famous acting dynasty. Barrymore/Carson/Bullock left films shortly after the changeover to sound.
