K. Subramanyam directs one of the first social reformist works in Tamil cinema. Due to the dark-hearted intrigue of her wealthy relatives, a Brahmin widow and her young daughter are cast out into the street. Having no where else to stay, she finds refuge in the home of her lower-caste servants. The villagers are scandalized by such a breech of traditional decorum and en masse go to the servant's house to burn it down. This film proved to be so controversial in its day, that Tamil Brahmins branded Subramanyam a social outcast.
